Lady Chargers Fall in OT Thriller at No. 11 DSU

Box Score CLEVELAND, Miss. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team gave the nation's 11th-ranked team all it could handle on Saturday afternoon before falling in overtime by a 65-60 score. UAH slips to 10-8 (5-7 Gulf South Conference) with the setback, while Delta State improves to 15-2 (10-1 GSC).

The Lady Chargers had a strong start to the contest, establishing the largest lead either team would enjoy in the game when a Jasmine Hammon 3-pointer made 15-6 in favor of the guests at the 14:05 mark of the opening period. Hammon would go on to score 11 of her 15 points in the period as UAH took a slim 27-26 lead into the halftime break.

After falling behind 43-39 to the Lady Statesmen just under the midway point of the second period, UAH would hold Delta State to just four points over the next nine minutes while scoring 12 – six of which were from Kendra Jones – to take a 49-47 lead with 1:43 left, but a Becca Ruckes layup on the ensuing possession knotted the contest at 49-49 and ultimately forced overtime.

Delta State then built up as much as a seven-point advantage in the extra session while outscoring UAH 16-11 to capture the 65-60 win.

Jones joined Hammon in double figures with 14 points, while Jordan Smith led UAH with 19 points. Pacing UAH on the glass was Juanice Newton with her 14 rebounds, but Seneca Walton collected 21 boards to help DSU hold a 53-50 rebounding advantage.

Walton also led Delta State with 14 points as the hosts outshot UAH by a 34.9 percent to 28.4 percent margin.

UAH will now return home for the first time in more than two weeks when it welcomes West Florida on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
