Box Score MANKATO, Minn. | Despite a school-record number of 61 saves by goaltender
Carmine Guerriero, the University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team fell 4-0 for the second-straight night to Minnesota State on Saturday at the Verizon Wireless Center.
UAH (1-30-1, 1-20-1 WCHA) could not get anything going on net against the Minnesota State (19-13-0, 17-7-0 WCHA) goaltender all evening, but Guerriero played the best game of his career between the pipes.
Guerriero saved a total of 61 shots, a school record in the modern Division I era (one short of all-time record), and also faced a school-record 65 shots on goal. For his efforts, the freshman was named the No. 2 star of the game. He also faced 28 shots on goal in the third period alone, which ties the school record in SOG in a period.
The Mavericks scored early at 4:22 in the first period when JP Lafontaine scored on a delayed penalty, before Johnny McInnis scored the second goal of the night at 7:26. Lafontaine would add his second goal of the night at 17:27 of the second period, giving his team a 3-0 lead entering the final period.
The Chargers mustered up just 10 shots all night, with four coming in both the second and third periods. UAH had a couple of chances late in the game, but MSU netminder Stephon Williams was sure to secure his shutout.
UAH finished 0-for-3 on the power play, while the nation's second-best power play conversion team went 2-for-6.
Guerriero also set the school record for shots faced in a period (28) and saves in a period (27) after the crazy final third.
The Blue and White return home for the first time in weeks, playing host to Lake Superior State on Feb. 21-22. Puck drops at 7:07 p.m. central time on both nights with Saturday being team photo giveaway night.
