Lady Chargers Earn Road Win at West Georgia

Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga. | All five starters scored in double figures, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team picked up a 75-63 road win at West Georgia on Sunday afternoon. The victory improves the Lady Chargers to 14-8 (9-7 Gulf South Conference), while West Georgia slips to 7-15 (5-11 GSC).
 
Juanice Newton led the team with 16 points while grabbing nine rebounds, and Jordan Smith notched a double-double as she scored 15 and grabbed 10 rebounds – split evenly on the glass at both ends of the floor.
 
Also scoring 15 was Jasmine Hammon – who also collected five steals for the nation's leading team in takeaways – while both Shannon Steinert and Kendra Jones also scored 10 points in the contest.
 
West Georgia grabbed an early advantage in the contest, leading by as many as four less than three minutes into the game, but UAH would recover en route to taking a 40-35 lead into the locker room at the half.
 
The lead increased to as high as seven points in the second half at 55-48 at the 14:20 mark, but West Georgia went on an 8-1 run over the next 4:15 to tie the contest at 56-56. The Lady Chargers, however, scored the next five points to go back in front, and the Wolves would not be able to pull any closer than two the rest of the way with UAH icing the contest with seven free throws down the stretch.
 
For the afternoon, UAH shot 35.9 percent from the field, while the hosts shot 32.3 percent but did make seven 3-pointers including three from Angela Davis who led the Wolves with 11 points.
 
West Georgia – with Ashley Prather grabbing 11 – won the rebounding margin by a 50-45 margin.
 
UAH will continue its road swing on Tuesday when the team travels to West Alabama. Tip-off in Livingston is slated for 5:30 p.m.
