UAH Knocks Off West Alabama for Fifth Straight Win

LIVINGSTON, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team led wire-to-wire on Tuesday night, defeating host West Alabama 95-84. The win propels the Lady Chargers to a 15-8 (10-7 Gulf South Conference) mark, while UWA slips to 4-19 (1-16 GSC).
 
The victory is the fifth consecutive for UAH.
 
For the second consecutive game, the Lady Chargers had five players score in double figures with Jordan Smith leading the way with 26 on the night, and she also grabbed a team-best seven rebounds.
 
Her two biggest shots of the night came in the closing minutes after UWA narrowed the gap to just six at 84-78 with 2:40 left in the game. The Hoover, Ala., native hit her third 3-pointer of the night with 2:18 left to push the lead back out to nine, and after a Juanice Newton rebound on the other end, Smith would hit her fourth trey to put UAH back up by double digits 90-78 with 1:33 remaining.
 
Smith would add four free throws down the stretch to help UAH seal the victory.
 
Joining her in double figures on the night, Jasmine Hammon scored 16 in the contest and collected five steals for a second straight game, while Josi Saunders chipped in with 14 off the bench. Kendra Jones continued her strong play of late as she tallied 11 points, and Newton rounded out the leaders with 10 points on the night.
 
Each of the 10 players in the UAH lineup on this night scored, and they all had points recorded by the end of the first 20 minutes of play as the Lady Chargers enjoyed a significant 48-30 advantage at the halftime break before West Alabama started to chip away at its deficit in the second half.
 
The Lady Chargers shot well on the night, connecting on 48.3 percent of their attempts including hitting nine 3-pointers, and UWA shot 44.8 percent on the evening. Almost perfect at the charity stripe was UAH who went 30-for-33 in free throws.
 
West Alabama won the rebounding battle in the contest 34-31.
 
Concluding the three-game road swing, UAH will return to action on Saturday at Lee. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m. CST.
