Box Score CLEVELAND, Tenn. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team put forth a strong effort on Saturday afternoon, coming up just short at Lee as the Lady Chargers fell 83-77. UAH slips to 15-9 (10-8 Gulf South Conference), while Lee – who leads the conference but is not eligible for the postseason – improves to 19-4 (15-2 GSC).
Jordan Smith turned in yet another strong showing as the senior guard poured in 31 points including a 12-for-14 performance at the charity stripe. The Hoover, Ala., native now needs just 37 points to join
Jasmine Hammon as the only two players in UAH history with 2,000 career points.
No school in GSC history has had two 2,000-point scorers on the same team.
Hammon joined Smith in double figures on Saturday as she scored 21 while grabbing a team-best eight rebounds, and
Kendra Jones continued her hot stretch as she scored 13 to run her scoring average to 10.9 over the team's last seven games.
UAH led by four at one point in the contest, using a 17-4 run over nearly seven minutes in the middle of the first half to turn an eight-point deficit into a 24-20 advantage. Six of the 17 UAH points during the run came from Smith, and all were at the foul line.
Following the strong UAH spurt, Lee would tear off a 20-7 run of its own on its way to a 40-31 lead at the halftime break, and that lead would grow to as much as 11 at 48-37 at the 16:12 mark of the second half before the Lady Chargers responded with a 13-2 run keyed by seven
Halle Jarnagin points that would tie the contest at 50-50 with 11:05 remaining.
UAH, however, would not be able to overcome the deficit in the game's closing minutes as Lee finished a strong 24-for-30 at the free throw line with many of those chances coming late in the second half.
For the contest, the Lady Chargers shot 34.4 percent as they used a strong 42.4 percent showing in the second half to outscore Lee 46-43 in the frame. The hosts connected on 40.0 percent of their attempts, including hitting 11 3-pointers on the evening.
Lee had four players score in double figures with Hollie German's 21 points leading the way, while Madison Lee chipped in with 15 and a team-high eight rebounds which helped the Lady Flames hold a 40-35 advantage on the glass.
UAH will now return home for the regular season's final week as the team will welcome Union on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. before hosting rival North Alabama at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
