Box Score HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team staged a furious rally in the second half but suffered a 78-68 setback to Union Thursday evening inside Kelly Court at Spragins Hall. UAH slips to 15-10 and 10-9 in the GSC while Union improves to 19-6 and 14-5 in conference play.
Senior
Jordan Smith led the Lady Chargers in scoring with 20 points and seven assists, and she now is just 17 points away from becoming the second player in program history to reach 2,000 points. Teammate
Jasmine Hammon was right behind with 19 points, and
Shannon Steinert scored 14 points to round out the leading scorers, scoring 13 of her points in the second half.
Junior
Juanice Newton dominated the boards with a career-high 17 rebounds.
It was a tale of two halves for the Lady Chargers as they would fall behind by as much as 19 to the Lady Bulldogs thanks to a 22-6 run over a span 6:57 in the opening stanza, and Union went into the half shooting 54.5 percent from the field and 53.8 percent from beyond the arc.
It was a different story in the second half, however, as the Lady Charger defensive effort held Union to just 25.9 percent shooting and 1-of-9 from 3-point range, and then with 13:10 left in the contest, Steinert converted on two straight 3-pointers to spark an 18-2 run that would eventually tie the game at 62-62 with 4:27 left.
Halle Jarnagin then got in on the action with a 3-pointer of her own, and the duo of Smith and Hammon scored the next seven points to tie the game.
That would be as close as the Lady Chargers would get, however, as Union finished the contest outscoring UAH 16-6 the rest of the way to clinch the win.
The Lady Chargers will finish out the regular season on Saturday when conference rival North Alabama comes to the Rocket City for a 5 p.m. tip-off.
