Jordan Smith scored a game-high 25 points to lead the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team to a 75-67 victory over Valdosta State at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall on Saturday evening. The win puts the Lady Chargers at 12-8 on the season and back at .500 in conference play at 7-7, while VSU slips to 10-9 overall and 5-8 in the conference.
Smith shot an efficient 5-for-7 from the field while shooting 13-of-15 from the charity stripe. Fellow senior
Jasmine Hammon recorded her third double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Defensively, UAH held April Thomas – who came into the game fourth in the GSC at 43.8 percent shooting from the field – in check as Thomas shot just 4-for-18 (22.2 percent) for 13 points.
The first half was closely contested despite UAH never trailing as the Lady Chargers went into the half with a two point lead at 35-33.
Leading VSU by just a point, UAH broke the game wide open with 17:21 to play in the contest as a 22-6 run over the next 6:59 would stretch the Lady Charger lead to the largest of the game at 61-44.
An old-fashioned three-point play by Smith sparked the run before
Shannon Steinert converted on a layup and a jumper to give the Lady Chargers a four-point lead.
The duo of
Juanice Newton and Hammon then scored the next 12 points for UAH followed by a
Josi Saunders' 3-pointer to cap the run.
VSU would cut the lead to seven with 1:25 to play followed by a layup by Amy Duke. However, Smith made her next four free throws to put the game out of reach and seal the victory for the Lady Chargers.
Duke led the visitors with 17 points as three other players went on to score in double figures.
The Lady Chargers will return to action on Thursday Feb. 13 for the final game of a three-game home stand at 5:30 p.m. when Shorter visits the Rocket City.
