Jordan Smith scored her 2,000th career point on her Senior Night, but the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team fell 87-84 to visiting rival North Alabama in a thrilling contest at Spragins Hall that went down to the wire. UAH slips to 15-11 (10-10 Gulf South Conference) with the setback, while UNA improves to 14-12 (9-11 GSC).
Smith needed 17 to reach the career plateau, and she finished the night with 22.
With Smith joining teammate
Jasmine Hammon at the 2,000-point mark, UAH becomes the first program in Gulf South Conference history to have two 2,000-point scorers on the same team, and the Lady Chargers join Delta State as the only program to ever have more than one.
On the night that they were recognized, UAH was led in scoring by the team's three seniors as Smith's 22 paced the team while
Kendra Jones had a career night as she scored 20 on the strength of a 6-of-9 showing from the floor.
Jasmine Hammon also scored in double figures as she scored 17 while also grabbing three steals.
UAH trailed by as many as 10 in the first half, facing a 31-21 deficit at the 5:43 mark, but the Lady Chargers closed the half with an 18-8 run that featured seven points from Smith as the teams went into the locker room tied 39-39 at the break.
The Lady Chargers then controlled much of the first 10 minutes of the second stanza, building up a six-point advantage that the team enjoyed at 67-61 with just under 11 minutes remaining in the contest, but the Lions would outscore UAH 26-17 through the rest of the contest to earn the victory.
It appeared as if UNA would win comfortably with free throws, but Smith made it interesting by hitting a 3-pointer with 12 seconds left, giving UAH a pair of opportunities to tie in the waning moments, but those attempts would not fall.
For the contest, North Alabama shot 47.7 percent while UAH connected on 37.7 percent of its attempts, and the visitors also won the rebounding battle on the evening by a 48-42 margin.
Nichelle Fillmore paced UNA with 25 points, while Jennifer Towne grabbed 16 points and collected 10 rebounds for a double-double.
UAH will now turn its attention to the Gulf South Conference Women's Basketball Championships which start next week in Birmingham, Ala., on the campus of Samford University.
