TEAM RESULTSNEW MARKET, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville cross country teams opened up the 2014 season on Saturday at the UAH-hosted Earl Jacoby Memorial at Sharon Johnston Park, and the men's team ran to a second-place finish while the women's squad placed fifth.

Both teams were missing their top runners from a season ago in
Blaise Binns and Victoria Winslow.

On the men's side, the Chargers ran as a pack for much of the 8,000 meter course, and the results demonstrate that as seven UAH runners finished in a 14-position span that started with top finisher
Kenny Richardson who finished 11th while pacing the Blue and White with a 26:41.4 time.

Myles Scarano finished 13th by completing the event in 26:52.8, while Danny Collins ran the course in 26:53.2 to place 14th. Turning in a time of 26:57.3 was
Jose Ortega who placed 15th, and
Daniel Rush rounded out the UAH scorers with a 27:12.4 time that was good for 21st.

The Chargers had another pair of runners finish in the top 25 in freshmen
Anthony Parameswaran and
Anthony Wells who finished 23rd and 25th, respectively. Parameswaran clocked in at 27:19.8, while Wells completed the day at 27:28.1. Also running for UAH were
Matt Ursprung (46th/28:05.5),
Will Parsons (56th/28:23.0),
Thomas Grace (28:24.1),
Taylor Buzzard (59th/28:28.4), and
Jeff Wilson (94th/30:59.0).

West Alabama won the event with 48 points with UAH in second on its 64 points. Shorter, Montevallo, and Valdosta State rounded out the top five.

On the women's side,
Michelle Kruse and
Kailey Williams led the way for the Chargers, finishing in third and fourth, respectively. Kruse crossed the line at 18:47.3, while Williams owned a time of 18:53.0.

UAH's next finishers came in the 46th, 47th and 48th positions in the form of
Heather Powell,
Chloe Whitworth, and
Kelsey Crawford. Powell finished in 20:54.4, Whitworth in 20:58.0, and Crawford crossed the line right at the 21-minute mark to complete UAH's scorers.

Vanessa Cardwell (67th/22:00.1),
Katie Brakke (73rd/22:17.1),
Anna Scarlett (83rd/23:06.6),
Alison Jay (85th/23:10.5), and
Katelyn Clarke (96th/24:17.4) also all ran for UAH on the day.

Montevallo captured the women's title, with West Alabama, Valdosta State, North Alabama, and the Chargers rounding out the top five.

UAH will now take the next two weeks to prepare for the Greater Louisville Classic on Oct. 4.
