UAH Erases Large Deficit but Falls 5-3 at Newberry

Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. | A valiant comeback effort by the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's soccer team was thwarted by Newberry in a 5-3 decision on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers slip to 0-2 with the loss, while Newberry begins the year at 1-0.

The hosts struck first and quickly, scoring three goals in a span of just over 12 minutes in the opening half to grab a commanding three-score lead with strikes in the eighth, 15th, and 20th minutes, but towards the end of the half the Chargers would find a response.

Sophomore Melody Dodd recorded her first goal in the 32nd minute, scoring an unassisted tally that made it 3-1, and the Huntsville native would then set up Summer Mooney nine minutes later in the 41st as Mooney struck to pull UAH within one by the halftime break at 3-2.

With the momentum of the contest squarely on their side, the Chargers would need just over 10 minutes into the second half to earn the equalizer as Isabel Shanteau would strike on an unassisted marker in the 56th minute to level the contest at 3-3.

The score would remain that way until the 75th minute when Sarah Sager scored her second goal of the day for Newberry, and she would ice the contest by completing the hat trick in the 83rd.

Newberry finished the contest with a 16-8 advantage in shots including a 13-7 edge in attempts that reached the target as Emily Rhodes (0-2) recorded eight saves in her second game as a starter for the Chargers.

UAH held a 6-1 margin in corners.

The Chargers will now return to the Rocket City for the 2014 home opener as the team welcomes Tennessee Temple to town on Tuesday night. Kickoff at Charger Park is set for 7 p.m.
