Box ScoreHUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team defeated the Alabama Hockey Club in an exhibition matchup at the Wilcoxon IcePlex by a score of 11-1 on Saturday night.
A total of nine different Chargers scored goals in the contest, with juniors
Brent Fletcher and
Cody Marooney leading the way with two markers each.
Freshman
Adam Wilcox started the scoring for the Chargers tallying a goal at 4:20 of the first period thanks to assists from
Cody Champagne and
Cam Knight, prior to fellow rookie
Hans Gorowsky capping off the UAH offense in the first period as he found the back of the net at 8:00 off a feed from
Regan Soquila to take a 2-0 lead.
UAH goalie
Matt Larose allowed a goal late to Alabama's Andre Morard with four seconds remaining in the frame to cut the Chargers lead to 2-1 heading into the first break.
The Chargers offense proceeded to erupt for five goals in the second period, beginning with freshman
John Teets at the 2:05 mark. More than seven minutes would pass before UAH went ahead 4-1 with Marooney sending his first goal of the game in a 9:29, followed by scores from
Jetlan Houcher at 11:20,
Jack Prince at 16:00 and Huntsville native
Josh Kestner at 18:02 to round out the second-period scoring and have the Chargers in front 7-1.
Fletcher – the UAH captain in 2015-16 – scored UAH's first two goals of the third period at 1:15 and 5:33, before Marooney added his second of the contest at 11:47 to make it a 10-1 UAH lead. Freshman
Tyler Poulsen scored the final goal of the evening at 14:53 of the third to bring the game to its 11-1 final.
Overall on Saturday, the Chargers had 67 shots on goal to Alabama's six.
UAH looks ahead to the beginning of WCHA play as Alaska Anchorage visits the VBC this coming Friday and Saturday, with 7:07 p.m. puck drops for both nights.
