HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's and women's tennis teams defeated Christian Brothers 8-1 and 8-0 at Athletic Club Alabama Sunday. The sweep brings both squads to 1-0 in Gulf South Conference play and 2-1 overall.
The matches were moved from Spragins Hall to the ACA indoor courts due to below freezing temperature.
On the men's side, Christian Brothers jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a win at doubles No. 1 where
David Cooper and
Pablo Herrero fell 8-6 to Austin Essary and Eric Mueller. The opening point, however, would be the Buccaneers last. The Chargers would sweep the next two doubles points with wins for pairings of
Jose Soto and
Elliot Hopson, and
Nestor Perez and
Harrison Stone.
UAH would also sweep the singles matches including wins from Soto over Essary (6-3, 6-1), Perez over Mueller (6-4, 6-1), Hopson over Nick Wiseman (6-1, 6-1),
Brodie Holmes over Steven Johnston (6-2, 6-2), Stone over Daniel D'Alto (6-0, 6-0), and
Rodrigo Palomino over Kim Abel (6-1, 6-1).
Soto's victory marks his thirteenth straight, a streak that began Feb. 24, 2014 with a win over Essary and Christian Brothers. Another milestone was reached as Palomino, a freshman, recorded his first career win at UAH.
The women's squad was also dominant, with eight wins in nine matches. The No. 5 singles match between
Katie Bryant and Rebecca Johnston was not completed, ending while Bryant led 7-6, 3-0.
Marleen Gort and
Aniek Remmerswaal got the winning stretch started with a commanding 8-0 triumph over Carly Lane and Tyler Napier at No. 1 doubles. Tandems of
Cristina Cabanas and Bryant, and
Marta Briega and
Abby Burks would also win their matches 8-2 and 8-0 respectfully.
The Chargers won five of five completed singles matches led by Gort and Briega who won their matches 6-0, 6-0 each. The other points can be attributed to Cabanas over Lauren Woog (6-4, 6-3),
Naomi Esteve over Meg Mattis (6-4, 6-0), and Burks over Lauren Harrett (6-1, 6-1).
UAH will be back in action in Rome, Ga. on Feb. 21 to take on the Shorter Hawks. Both men's and women's matches are slated for a noon start.
