CLINTON, Miss. | The No. 6 University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team swept the doubleheader against Mississippi College to open the three-game GSC series on Saturday by scores of 15-9 and 9-6 at Frierson Field. UAH improves to 9-1-1 (5-1-1 GSC), while MC drops to 7-6 (2-6 GSC).
UAH went up early in the second inning on a bases-loaded walk by
Tanner Cimo to give UAH a 1-0 lead, but Mississippi College would break through its scoreless streak with a five-run rally in the bottom of the fourth off UAH starter
Daniel Koger.
Koger went on to finish the inning and completed 6.0 frames in the game, while improving to 4-0 this season. The Rocket City native was tagged for five earned runs with 10 hits allowed and four strikeouts.
The southpaw benefitted from a strong offense by the Chargers in the later innings of the first game, as the Blue and White put together a seven-run seventh inning – highlighted by a two-RBI triple by Cimo – to take a commanding 9-5 advantage.
The Choctaws added one run in the seventh before the Chargers posted four runs in the top of the eighth, which included a two-RBI double by
Ryan Barnes. Senior
Brandon Lawing ended the UAH attack in the top of the ninth with a two-run homer – his first of the season – to put UAH further ahead 15-6.
Mississippi College added three runs in the ninth inning, all tagged to
Logan Crook, before
Dalton Goss recorded the final two outs to seal the conference win.
The Chargers flexed their muscle early in the second game on Saturday, as Lawing hit a two-run home run which was immediately followed by a solo shot from senior
Chandler Brock to make it 3-0 UAH.
UAH starting pitcher
Chris Kilpatrick allowed the Choctaws first run of the game in the bottom of the first to make it 3-1 UAH, but the Chargers bounced back to a three-run lead in the top of the second on a RBI single from
Cody Burton.
Both squads would add a run in the fourth, before UAH took control of the contest with a four-run rally in the top of the fifth. Lawing highlighted the inning with a three-RBI double that cleared a bases-loaded situation.
Mississippi College was able to post two runs after the UAH four-run fifth, and then again one run in the sixth and seventh. However, they could not muster enough offense to catch the Chargers' torrid offense.
Kilpatrick finished the afternoon with one earned run allowed, two walks and three strikeouts. He was given a no-decision in his 78-pitch outing.
The win went to
Charlie Weaver, who is now 1-0 on the season and pitched .2 innings with two runs allowed and a walk.
Luke Mould finished off the game, allowing four hits and one run. Mould's hits and run allowed were his first of the 2014-15 season.
The Chargers and Choctaws will matchup for the series finale tomorrow on the Mississippi College campus. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
