HUNTSVILLE | The No. 6 University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team opened the three-game Gulf South Conference series with a 3-1 win over Shorter on Saturday evening at Charger Park. UAH improves to 10-1-1 (6-1-1 GSC), while Shorter falls to 7-5 (5-2 GSC).
Lefty
Daniel Koger was excellent on the bump for the Chargers on Saturday, tossing a season-high 10 strikeouts en route to improving his season record to a perfect 5-0. Koger completed 6.1 innings with nine hits allowed, one run and three walks in the 102-pitch outing.
The Hawks offense started out well as the visitors took an early 1-0 lead on a RBI single to center by Bryan Matthews in the top of the first.
However, reigning GSC and South Region Player of the Week
Brandon Lawing quickly erased the deficit, launching his third home run of the season – a solo shot – in the bottom half of the opening frame.
Following the first inning, Koger and Shorter's starter Russell Crosby engaged in a pitcher's duel, with the ensuing four full frames going scoreless and holding the Chargers and Hawks in a 1-1 tie.
In the bottom of the sixth,
Austin Sanders was able to lay down a successful bunt for a base hit which also drove in senior
Chandler Brock from third base to give UAH a 2-1 advantage. Â
The following inning, Brock was able to give the Chargers some room to breathe on a RBI single to right field with the bases loaded to bring the game to its 3-1 final.
Senior
Luke Mould notched his third save of 2015, after working the final 2.2 innings with one hit allowed and two strikeouts. The right-hander owns a 0.77 ERA so far in 11.2 innings of work this season.
UAH and Shorter will look ahead to tomorrow's doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. to wrap up the three-game set at Charger Park.
