No. 6 UAH Completes Series Sweep of Shorter

HUNTSVILLE | The No. 6 University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team picked up two wins in Sunday's doubleheader against Shorter by scores of 12-10 and 2-0 to complete the Gulf South Conference series sweep at Charger Park. UAH improves to 12-1-1 (8-1-1 GSC), while SU drops even to 7-7 (5-4 GSC).

Both teams plated a run in the opening frame to tie the game at 1-1 through one full, but UAH was able to break the tie quickly with three runs  in the second to take a 4-1 lead on a two-RBI double by Cody Burton and a RBI single by Ryan Barnes.

However, the Hawks put together an eight-run rally that included five run scoring base hits to notch their first lead of the day at 9-4. Shorter added one more run on a wild pitch by Chris Kilpatrick in the fifth to make it 10-4 Hawks.

The Chargers were able to pull within one run with five runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 10-9, thanks mostly to a solo homer by Austin Sanders and a three-run blast by Brandon Lawing.

Jordan Shusteric scored the tying run in the seventh inning as Shorter's pitcher Brandon Reynolds made a throwing error on a potential groundout, allowing Shusteric to score all the way from first. Burton followed with a sac fly to drive in Tanner Cimo from third – who reached third on Reynolds' error – to give UAH the definitive 11-10 lead.

Cimo later added a RBI double in the eighth to give the Chargers some breathing room and bring the game to its 12-10 final.

Kilpatrick improves to 1-0 on the season, after tossing 3.1 innings out of the bullpen with one run allowed, three walks and one strikeout. Senior Luke Mould picks up his fourth save of the season, completing the final 2.0 innings with one hit and two strikeouts.

The second game proved to be a heated pitcher's duel as the Chargers' Mitchell Wright and the Hawks' Blake Weir had scoreless outings through the first three innings.

UAH was able to end the scoreless tie in the fourth inning, with Zach Dugas driving in the go-ahead run on a RBI bunt single. The Chargers added their second run of the game in the bottom of the sixth, when Shorter's second baseman Zach Santos sent an errant throw past first base allowing Michael Fox to score from second to give UAH a 2-0 advantage.

Wright was spectacular in his 7.0 shutout innings of work on Sunday afternoon, as the southpaw struck out eight and allowed zero walks. He held the Hawks to a .136 batting average, while lowering his season ERA to 0.66.

The Chargers have a total of four road games in the  coming week, beginning with a midweek contest at Montevallo on Wednesday at 5 p.m. and ending with a trip to Pensacola, Florida to take on GSC opponent West Florida in a three-game weekend series.
