HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's tennis team defeated Montevallo 7-2 Wednesday afternoon. The win brings the Chargers to 5-3 overall on the season while the Falcons slip to 5-5.
UAH got off to hot start, sweeping all three matches in doubles play. At doubles No. 1,
Marleen Gort and
Aniek Remmerswaal defeated Nikola Polcerova and Anais Robert 8-5, while
Katie Bryant and
Cristina Cabanas knocked off Allison Howell and Grace Rowe 8-6 at doubles No. 2.
Montevallo was able to pick up two points in singles play, but the Chargers were able to prevail, picking up the three points to finish off the Falcons. Cabanas led the way, defeating Howell in straight sets (6-2, 6-2), while Remmerswaal won in equally impressive fashion, 6-3, 6-1 over Rowe.
Naomi Esteve was also victorious, upending Octavia Saunders 6-0, 6-4. Â Gort and Briega fell to Polcerova and Robert, while Abbie Burks was idle as UAH clinched early.
The Chargers will be back in action alongside the men's squad Saturday as they take on GSC foe Valdosta State. The matches are slated to begin at 1 p.m.
