MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville tennis teams started off their spring break road trip on Monday, and the women fell 4-3 to Alabama State while the men dropped a 5-2 decision to ASU.
The ladies slip to 5-5 on the season, and the gentlemen slip to 2-5.
In women's doubles action, ASU won the point by taking two of the three matches with UAH's win in doubles play coming at the No. 2 where
Katie Bryant and
Cristina Cabanas were 7-5 winners.
That point proved to be pivotal as the teams proceeded to split singles at 3-3.
Cabanas carried momentum into her singles match, winning 6-2, 6-4 at the second position, while the No. 1 singles match was also won by UAH as
Marleen Gort was a 7-5, 6-3 winner.
Naomi Esteve secured UAH's other point, securing the No. 4 singles showdown with a 7-5, 6-4 victory.
Aniek Remmerswaal made a bid for a fourth point for the Chargers from her No. 5 position, responding from a 6-0 setback to win 7-5 before ultimately falling 6-2 in the deciding set.
On the men's side, the Chargers lose the doubles point by a 2-1 margin as the No. 1 pairing of
Jose Soto and
Nestor Perez were victors by a 6-3 score.
Soto then parlayed his doubles success into a victory in his singles match, winning at the No. 1 comfortably 6-1, 6-2, and it was
Elliot Hopson who gave the Chargers the team's other point as he was a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 winner at the fifth position.
Harrison Stone grabbed an early lead in the No. 6 singles, winning 6-1 in the opening set before falling 6-1 and 6-2 to drop the point.
The two teams will continue play on the Gulf Coast on Tuesday when they take on Spring Hill in Mobile.
