HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's tennis team defeated the West Georgia Wolves 8-1 at Athletic Club Alabama Sunday. UAH improves to 4-2 on the season and a perfect 3-0 in Gulf South Conference play while the Wolves fall to 5-5 overall and 0-5 in GSC matches.
The Charges picked up their points early and often, sweeping West Georgia in doubles play.
Marleen Gort and
Aniek Remmerswaal led the way with an 8-2 victory over Taylor Lefton and Gabrielle Chanthaphaeng. Duos of
Katie Bryant and
Cristina Cabanas, and
Naomi Esteve and
Marta Briega also won in convincing fashion, defeating their opponents 8-3 each.
In singles play, UAH took five of six points, clinching the victory early after only two dual matches. Gort headlined the singles rout, surrending only one set, defeating Nicole Northrup 6-0, 6-1. Cabanas also won convincingly, defeating Lefton 6-2, 6-1. Chanthaphaeng gave Briega a scare, but Briega held on to win 3-6, 6-4, 10-5. Esteve and Remmerswaal added wins for good measure, downing Sara Watson and Whitney Maples.
The Chargers are back in action in Florence, Ala. on March 13 when they take on conference foe North Alabama. The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
