HUNTSVILLE | The No. 5 University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team completed the Gulf South Conference series sweep with back-to-back wins in the doubleheader against Union on Saturday at Charger Park by scores of 4-1 and 16-4. UAH improves to 35-6-1 (21-6-1 GSC), while UU drops to 7-35 (5-25 GSC).
Prior to the start of game one Saturday, UAH celebrated the collegiate careers of 11 seniors as they played their career's final regular season home series this weekend. The senior class included
Ryan Barnes,
Chandler Brock,
Cody Burton,
Ben Hall,
Tyler Howell,
Daniel Koger,
Brandon Lawing,
Luke Mould,
Jordan Shusteric,
Colton Simbeck, and
Mitchell Wright.
UAH got on the board quickly in the first after Burton and Brock completed a double-steal with an errant throw by Union catcher Chaz Wilson allowing Burton to easily score from third. After receiving a 1-0 lead in the first, UAH starting pitcher
Tyler Howell got into a groove setting down the first six batters he faced before giving up his lone run of the game in the third to make it a 1-1 tie.
Hall pushed the Chargers back in front with a solo home run in the bottom half of the third, and UAH was able to extend the lead to 4-1 with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
Mould notched his ninth save of the season, hurling 2.2 scoreless frames with three strikeouts to end the contest. The right-hander needed just 27 pitches in his time on the mound.
UAH totaled nine base hits in the opening game of the doubleheader, led by Hall and Brock who each went 2-for-4.
The Chargers bats came alive early in game two, as the squad rallied for a total of nine runs in the bottom of the first.
Tanner Cimo, Simbeck and Barnes had two-RBI base hits each, before Hall capped off the effort with a three-run round-tripper to right field.
The Bulldogs brought the game within six runs after one run in the second and two more in the third, but UAH chipped in two runs in the bottom of the third to bring the game to 11-3. Union's final run of the game would come in the fourth inning off of UAH starting pitcher
Mitchell Wright, who finished the game with six hits, three earned runs and three strikeouts.
The Blue and White put together a three-run rally in the fourth and two runs in the sixth before sealing the 16-4, sweep-clinching win with 3.0 combined scoreless frames by
Chris Kilpatrick and
Wilson Adams.
Brock led the way in game two as well with a 4-for-5 performance with three runs and two RBI, pacing the Chargers 17 hit total. Burton, Simbeck, and Barnes each had multi-hit performances in the final regular season home game at UAH.
UAH looks ahead to the final regular season series of the season with a trip to Livingston, Alabama to take on West Alabama in a three-game set next Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
