HUNTSVILLE | The No. 6 University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team topped Montevallo in walk-off fashion in 10 innings by a final score of 10-9 on Wednesday night at Charger Park. UAH improves to 29-6-1, while UM dips to 18-18.
Sophomore
Zach Dugas had a career-night, registering his first collegiate multi-homer game - two solo shots - with his first coming in the sixth and his second a game-tying blast in the eighth that allowed UAH to go into extras with a 9-9 tie with the Falcons.
Senior
Luke Mould (4-1) came out of the bullpen in the eighth to toss 2.2 scoreless frames, setting the stage for the Chargers' walk-off winner. Dugas,
Chandler Brock and
AJ Walden reached base consecutively with one out in the 10th, immediately followed by a hit-by-pitch to
Ben Rhodes to drive in Dugas from third for the game-winning run.
The Chargers banged out a total of 16 base hits in the win over Montevallo, led by Dugas who went a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with four runs scored and three RBI.
Brandon Lawing added a 3-for-5 performance with one RBI, while Walden chipped in two hits, a run scored, a walk and two RBI.
Freshman
Heath McRae made the start on the mound for the Chargers, tossing 5.0 innings with four runs allowed, one walks and six strikeouts.
Charlie Weaver was efficient out of the bullpen in his 1.1 innings of work with no hits or walks allowed while fanning two.
UAH will jump back into Gulf South Conference play this weekend with a trip to Memphis, Tennessee to take on Christian Brothers in a three game set. The series will begin at noon on Saturday with a doubleheader, followed by the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m.
