A NEW SEASON: The UAH women's basketball team will start off the 2016-17 season this weekend, traveling to Tuskegee to square off against a pair of Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponents. The Chargers will take on Claflin on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in a neutral site affair before turning around to face host Tuskegee at 6 p.m. on Saturday. A season ago, UAH was 3-1 in non-conference games during the regular season.
Â
YEAR THREE: This weekend's contests will mark the start of the third season with
Andrea Lemmond at the helm of the program. In her second year, the Chargers improved by four wins and finished three games over .500 at 15-12 after posting an 11-18 record in 2014-15. Lemmond's squad was especially strong at home last year, rolling up an 11-4 record at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall.
Â
EXPERIENCED GROUP: Despite having no seniors and having graduated four from last year's team, there is no lack of experience on this year's group. UAH nine returners have combined to start 107 games and have logged a total of 4,057 minutes during their time in Huntsville.
Baylee Johnson is the leading scorer among returners after she posted 9.4 points per game during her freshman season last year, while
Chandler Elder is back for her third year after leading the team with 2.4 assists per game in 2015-16.
Â
NEW FACES: In addition to the veteran experience that the team has, there are three freshmen on the squad who come to the Rocket City after strong high school careers. Two of the newcomers are from Alabama in Pisgah's
Presley Johnson and Decatur's
Katie Speegle, while the third hails from the Volunteer State in
Aryn Sanders from Signal Mountain, Tennessee.
Â
ABOUT CLAFLIN: The first opponent of the new year posted a 17-11 record last year en route to finishing third in the SIAC's East Division. Dominique Williams is the team's leading scorer that returns after she averaged 7.8 points per game last season, while Carmique Marks is also back after scoring 7.0 points per game to go along with 6.2 rebounds per contest last year.
Â
SERIES HISTORY: Friday's meeting will be the first between the two institutions in women's basketball.
Â
ABOUT TUSKEGEE: This weekend's host went 5-21 last season, placing last in the SIAC's West Division with a conference mark of 4-12. The team boasts the SIAC's Preseason Player of the Year in Rachel Brownlee who scored 17 points per game a year ago.
Â
SERIES HISTORY: The Chargers are 5-2 all-time against Tuskegee, and the two teams met last year in Huntsville with UAH winning 58-46. Johnson scored seven in the victory, while Elder dished out a team-best four assists.
