BOX SCORECARROLLTON, Ga. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville rolled to a conference victory on Sunday, defeating host West Georgia 8-1. The Chargers improve to 2-4 (1-1 Gulf South Conference) with the victory.
Â
The contest started with some close play in doubles action, and it was the visitors who captured the first point of the match when the No. 3 pairing of
Cristina Cabanas and
Madison Gulick won 8-3.
Â
West Georgia proceeded to level the match at 1-1 with an 8-3 victory at the No. 2 in doubles, but
Marleen Gort and
Sarah Stearman lifted the Chargers to a 2-1 lead when that duo was victorious 8-5 at the No. 1 position.
Â
UAH then dispensed of any further intrigue as Gort, Stearman, and Cabanas each were 6-0, 6-0 winners at the top three positions in singles to clinch the match for the Chargers by going up 5-1, and the visitors would then go on to win the rest of the singles points as well with
Aniek Remmerswaal a 6-3, 6-2 winner at the fourth position,
Naomi Esteve winning the No. 5 match 6-3, 6-0, and
Marta Briega capturing the sixth-position contest 6-3, 7-5.
Â
The Chargers will be back in action on Friday when they return home and step back out of conference play with a visit from Division I member Tennessee Martin. UAH is 1-1 against Division I schools this year, knocking off Belmont 5-2 in its most recent home match on Feb. 19.
