HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team will open up play in the 2016 Gulf South Conference Women's Basketball Championships on Tuesday as the No. 6 seed, traveling to third-seeded Shorter for a quarterfinal contest. The tip is slated for 6 p.m. CST.

UAH will be making its fifth straight conference tournament appearance, and the squad will be looking for its first quarterfinal victory since the 2013 run to the tournament title.

In nine previous tournament appearances, the Chargers are 5-8 and have reached the championship game twice.

The Chargers posted a 15-11 overall record during the regular season and also featured a 12-10 mark in conference play to finish sixth in the league standings, and the team finished the year strong, winning four of its last five games including a 58-51 win over North Alabama in the regular season finale.

Senior
Dina Saunders is the team's offensive leader, averaging 12.8 points per game as she has registered double figures in 21 of the team's 26 games, and Saunders is also strong on the glass as she has two double-doubles and a 5.5 rebounding average.

Fellow senior
Halle Jarnagin has the team's best rebounding mark, grabbing 6.3 boards per game, and she is tied with
Chandler Elder for the team lead in assists as both have dished out 2.4 per contest.

The Hawks took both regular season meetings between the teams, winning back in December in Huntsville by a 60-47 margin and then taking the contest in Rome 66-58 at the start of February.

Particularly impressive against the Hawks in the two games was freshman
Baylee Johnson as she averaged 19 points while shooting 54.2 percent against Tuesday's opponent.

Shorter also had a strong close to the regular season, winning seven of their last eight games including winning five straight at home where the Hawks posted an 11-2 record this year.

Taylor Adams is at the top of the SU offensive ledger, scoring 16.0 points per contest, and she is averaging a double-double as she is also grabbing 10.6 rebounds per game.

Tuesday's winner will advance to the semifinals which will be held on Friday at Samford's Pete Hanna Center in Birmingham.
