VALDOSTA, Ga. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's tennis team pulled off a tremendous upset on Wednesday, defeating 15th-ranked Valdosta State 5-4 in the final match of the team's Spring Break trip. UAH improves to 8-8 overall and a stunning 6-1 in conference play, while VSU slips to 5-5 overall and 2-1 in GSC action.
Â
The victory is one of several signature wins for the program this year as UAH defeated then-No. 36 Augusta on Monday in the middle of its five contests in five days stretch while also recording a triumph over Division I member Belmont on Feb. 19.
Â
It was a strong effort in doubles play that sparked UAH to the win on Wednesday as the Chargers swept all three points starting with a pair of 8-2 victories from the No. 3 duo of
Aniek Remmerswaal and
Sarah Stearman and the second-position pairing of
Marleen Gort and
Naomi Esteve.
Â
The top pairing of
Madison Gulick and
Cristina Cabanas then put the Chargers in great shape needing just two of the six singles points when they outlasted their opposition 9-7 at the top spot to give the guests a 3-0 lead.
Â
The Lady Blazers would level the affair, taking the first three points in singles action by winning at the fourth, third, and fifth, but Cabanas moved UAH to the brink of victory with a 6-0, 7-5 victory at the second position to put the Chargers up 4-3.
Â
Marta Briega then sealed the match for UAH with a strong 6-3, 7-5 victory in the No. 6 singles match-up.
Â
VSU won at the top position to create the 5-4 final in favor of the Blue and White.
Â
The Chargers are now off until the team returns to Huntsville for a four-match homestand to close out the regular season, and that stretch starts with an April 2 visit from No. 26 Shorter.
