Women's Tennis Advances at GSC Championships

WOMEN'S BOX SCORE | MEN'S BOX SCORE
MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's tennis team advanced to the 2016 Gulf South Conference Championships semifinals with 5-3 a victory Thursday over fifth-seeded North Alabama in the opening round, while the men's team closed out the campaign with a 5-0 setback to top-seeded and the nation's No. 4 West Florida.

The women's team improves to 11-10 on the year to move on for the second time in three years while avenging last year's quarterfinal setback to UNA.

The Chargers grabbed the early lead in Thursday's contest as the No. 1 pairing of Cristina Cabanas and Madison Gulick won 8-4 while Aniek Remmerswaal and Sarah Stearman teamed up for an 8-6 victory at the third position in doubles, lifting UAH in front 2-1 after UNA captured the point at the second spot.

The teams then traded points as singles play started with UNA taking the No. 5 singles match before Marta Briega gave the Chargers the lead again with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at the sixth position that made the overall score 3-2 in favor of UAH.

North Alabama again leveled the affair with a win at No. 5, but Marleen Gort produced a 6-4, 6-3 win at the top position to put the Chargers on the brink of victory which the team would secure when Cabanas sealed it with a 7-5, 6-2 win at the second spot.

UAH will now turn its attention to top-seeded UWF who was a 5-0 winner over Lee on Thursday.

The men's team finished 2016 with a 2-19 setback after dropping the contest on Thursday to the talented Argos.

UWF won each of the doubles points by 8-1 scores and then added a pair of points in singles play to close out the match.

At the fifth position, Harrison Stone had won the first set 6-4, but the match was left unfinished with the overall contest having been decided. Noah Pring took four games from his opponent at the No. 6 spot, while Elliot Hopson took a pair of games in the opener at the second.
