JACKSONVILLE, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville cross country teams opened up the 2016 campaign on Friday evening, and both the men and women took home the team titles at the JSU Strut's Season Opener.Â
The men's team has now won six straight regular season competitions dating back to the final meet of 2014.
Having three individuals finish in the top five among non-Division I institutions, the men's squad cruised to the title as UAH finished with just 35 points compared to second-place North Alabama's 79 points. The Chargers also outran GSC members Valdosta State (6th/125), Shorter (7th/189), and West Georgia (8th/223) in the 5k event.Â
Anthony Wells paced the team as he was the top non-Division I finisher — and sixth overall — with a 15:23.5 time, and he was joined in the top five by Brydon Groves-Scott who finished fourth by clocking in at 15:44.0 and fifth-place finisher Benjamin Knox and his 15:48.7 time. Rounding out UAH's scorers, Alex Gilliland's 16:00.3 time and Corey Lewenkamp's mark of 16:07.8 were good for 13th and 14th, respectively.
UAH's women placed two in the top 10 en route to recording 46 points which was 20 points better than UNA's 66-point showing, and as in the men's race, the Chargers were better on this night than fellow GSC schools Valdosta State (4th/95), West Georgia (7th/188), and Shorter (8th/236).
With a time of 15:04.3 in the 4k run, Angel Sillivant was UAH's top performer while finishing second in the non-Division I contingent of the meet. She was followed by seventh-place runner Marlee Mason who completed the course in 15:35.4, and the Charger scoring group was also comprised of Lauren Allred who crossed the line at 15:47.6, Vanessa Cardwell and her 12th-place time of 15:51.8, and Stacy Solomon who finished in 15:54.9.
Other runners for UAH on the women's side included Auburn Cohan (15:59.4), Amy Dunham (16:11.8), Trina Badger (16:31.8), Allison Ammons (16:44.8), Olivia Goldsby (16:51.8), Kristen Fuller (17:01.4), Alex Porter (17:13.1), and Madison Pegouske (18:07.2).
On the men's team, Anthony Parameswaran (16:12.4), Adam Wellenfelz (16:23.8), Thomas Grace (16:26.3), Tripp Maloy (16:33.8), Kramer Crider (16:34.4), Will Parsons (16:44.0), Daniel Rush (16:52.5), Carson Tullo (16:59.8), Nick Klein (17:06.3), and Will Bryant (17:52.2) also all competed.
