Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

No. 21 UAH Pushes Streak to Six with Win at MC

CLINTON, Miss. | The No. 21 University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team won its sixth straight game on Thursday night, defeating host Mississippi College 80-70. The Chargers improve to 11-3 (7-1 Gulf South Conference), while MC slips to 4-8 (1-7 GSC).

Turning Point
-With Mississippi College closing what had been a 17-point lead to just seven with 3:12 left in the game, but Kip Owens drew a foul and made both free throws and Brandon Roberts hit a 3-pointer to put UAH back ahead by double digits and essentially seal the contest.

Inside the Box Score
-The Chargers were led on the night by Justin Ward who was a strong 5-for-7 from beyond the arc en route to scoring 19 as one of four players who scored in double figures for the Chargers.
-Chayse Elliott added 14 for UAH, and he was joined in double digits by Roberts and Owens who scored 13 and 12, respectively.
-Owens also grabbed a team-high six rebounds while adding a pair of assists and a block for good measure.
-For the contest, UAH shot 44.4 percent compared to 42.6 percent for the Choctaws, and the hosts won the rebounding battle by a 39-31 margin.
-The UAH bench was instrumental in the contest with Ward and Elliott helping the Chargers outscore MC's reserves by a 38-18 margin.
-The Chargers were 22-for-24 at the free throw line, making 20 straight before the team missed for the first time in the game.

Inside the Flow
-After falling behind 4-0 to start the game, UAH would go on a 14-2 run to go up by eight at 14-6 at the 13:17 mark of the half with Ward's first 3-pointer of the night capping off the run.
-The hosts would cut the deficit to just four at 19-15 with 8:44 left in the half, but over the next five minutes the Chargers would outscore MC 16-5 to go ahead 35-20 with 3:29 on the clock.
-The Choctaws could only narrow the gap to 11 in the final moments of the half, and a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Troy Saxton made it a 41-26 game at the break.
-The advantage for the Chargers would grow to as many as 17 by the 14:07 mark of the second half with an old-fashioned 3-point play from Elliott making it 51-34, and the Chargers would enjoy that margin again with 7:57 left in the game as they held a 65-48 advantage.
-Over the next few minutes, however, the game would tighten as MC outscored UAH 14-4 to pull the game back into single digits at 69-62 with 3:12 on the clock, but a couple free throws from Owens and a 3-pointer from Roberts helped UAH stem the tide, with MC unable to pull any closer than eight in the game's waning moments.

Noteworthy
-The win marks the 499th of head coach Lennie Acuff's career.
-With his seven points, Webster moved his career point total to 1,500 which ranks seventh all-time in UAH history.
-Ward's 19-point showing is his best of the season as it was one better than the 18 he scored against Bellarmine, and it marks the sixth time this year he has reached double figures.
-The 44.4 percent shooting performance by the Chargers matches the lowest for UAH in a win. The team also shot 44.4 percent against Tampa on Nov.13.

Next Time Out
-The Chargers will return to action on Saturday when the squad visits Delta State who was receiving votes in this week's NABC Division II Top 25 rankings. Tip-off in Cleveland, Mississippi, is scheduled for 4 p.m.
