No. 25 UAH Prevails in Another OT Thriller Over Union

PHOTOS
HUNTSVILLE | For a third consecutive year it was a stunning conclusion at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall when The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team met Union, with the 25th-ranked Chargers completing an improbable comeback in a 111-109 overtime victory on Saturday. UAH improves to 9-3 (5-1 Gulf South Conference), while the Bulldogs fall to 8-5 (3-4 GSC).

Turning Point
-Though there were many pivotal moments in this contest, the one that sealed the contest for the Chargers came with 11 seconds left in the overtime period when Brandon Roberts passed it to Kip Owens who proceeded to bang in a 3-pointer to put the Chargers up 111-109. UAH then prevented Union from making its final shot attempt fall at the buzzer.

Inside the Box Score
-Preseason honorable mention All-American Seab Webster scored a career-best 38 points in the contest to lead all scorers, making 13 field goals fall while also going 10-for-11 at the charity stripe. For good measure, he added a team-high eight rebounds.
- Roberts was one of three other Chargers to score in double figures as he scored 17, while Justin Ward came off the bench to knock down four triples on his way to 15 points.
-Troy Saxton rounded out the double-figure scoring contingent as he had 14 while grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out seven assists.
-Union was led by Ashanti Day who scored 22 and grabbed nine rebounds before fouling out of the game with less than a minute to go in regulation.
-The visitors outshot UAH by a 56.1 percent to 48.1 percent clip, and the Bulldogs were 20-for-35 from 3-point land with the Chargers going 15-for-30 from long-range.
-Union also won the battle on the glass by a 43-34 margin.
-UAH turned the ball over just seven times, but UU gave it away on 17 occasions, leading to a significant 25-7 differential in points off turnovers tilted towards the Chargers.

Inside the Flow
-The contest was tight through the opening eight minutes with neither team leading by more than three at any point, but with UAH up 22-20 at the 12:20 mark, Union would go on a 21-10 run over the next seven minutes to grab its largest lead to that point at 41-32 with just over five minutes left until halftime.
-Five straight points for the Chargers would then close the gap back down to four before the guests closed out the half on a 14-3 run to lead 55-40 at the break.
-Union's lead remained in double figures through the start of the second half and ballooned to as many as 19 at 75-56 at the 12:10 mark of the second half.
-The Chargers proceeded to claw their way back into the game, and a 7-0 run started by a dunk from Webster during a period of just over one minute turn an 87-71 deficit into a nine-point ballgame at 87-78 with 5:36 on the clock after Michael Gilmore completed an old-fashioned 3-point play.
-UAH then could only pull to as close as eight before Tray Boyd hit a 3-pointer to give Union a 94-83 lead with 3:30 remaining in regulation, but Gilmore and Roberts then hit back-to-back treys and Webster had consecutive buckets to give UAH a 10-0 spurt over two minutes to make it 94-93 with 1:23 left in the period.
-Union had an answer with a KC Goodwin triple, but Roberts was sent to the line on the next two possessions for the hosts to tie the contest at 97-97 with 22 seconds left.
-The Bulldogs again responded as Charlie Wilson made a layup fall with eight seconds left, but Webster then went the length of the court and scored with just over three seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime tied at 99-99.
-Union controlled the first three minutes of overtime with three of UAH's seven turnovers coming during that stretch as Union pushed out to a 108-102 lead, but Saxton ended a 7-0 Bulldog run with a 3-pointer, and after a Union free throw made it 109-105, Webster was fouled attempting a trey, sending him to the line where he made all three shots to put UAH down just one at 109-108 with 48 seconds left in overtime.
-Two possessions later, Union's Nick Velasquez was fouled, but he missed both free throws with Collin Langley grabbing the ever-important defensive rebound that created the opportunity for Owens to win the game with the late 3-pointer.

Noteworthy
-Webster's 38 points eclipses his career-best mark which was 33 – a performance he had twice: against West Alabama last year and at Union during his sophomore campaign, and the 13 field goals match Webster's career-high which came in the aforementioned Union game.
-The 38-point performance is the highest for a Charger since Wayne Dedrick scored 36 on Jan. 25, 2014, at North Alabama.
-The seven assists from Saxton mark a season-best by a Charger.
-In last season's double overtime thriller against Union, the Chargers overcame an 18-point deficit to win 105-101.
-UAH breaks the century mark for the first time this season and records its highest scoring total since also recording 111 points against Tennessee Wesleyan on Dec. 2, 2013.

Next Time Out
-UAH returns to action on Monday when the team hosts Christian Brothers. Tip-off in the Rocket City is slated for a special start time of 3 p.m.
