HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team will open up play at the 2017 Gulf South Conference Men's Soccer Championships on Friday as the second-seeded Chargers will battle No. 3 seed Mississippi College in the semifinals of the event. Kick-off is slated for noon at the Emory Folmar YMCA complex in Montgomery.

UAH earned the No. 2 seed and a bye to the semifinals after posting a 7-2-2 mark in conference play to feature an 8-6-2 overall record, while the Choctaws also went 7-2-2 in league play and defeated West Florida 3-2 on Tuesday to advance to the semis at 11-2-3.

The appearance in the conference tournament marks UAH's 13th overall, and it is the fifth straight for the Chargers including two under head coach Chris Kranjc who has guided his team to earning the bye after a quarterfinals showing last season.

Under Kranjc this year, the Chargers have featured the league's second-most prolific scoring offense as the team is averaging 2.25 goals per game, and UAH players hold down two of the top three spots on the GSC's points ledger with Corentin Diverres pacing the conference with 25 points while Jordan Wright is third with 23 points.

Diverres was especially strong in conference action, scoring eight of his nine goals against GSC opponents while adding six of his seven assists in league contests, and both the sophomore and Wright earned spots on the All-GSC First Team.

That pair was joined by midfielder Gunnar Birgisson who earned Second Team honors.

The scoring attack for the Chargers — though anchored by the strong performances by Diverres and Wright – has also been quite balanced as 10 other players have scored for UAH including five others who have at least a pair of scores on the season.

One of those with multiple scores is Khalil Bell who owns four goals including the team's lone strike in the regular season meeting with the Choctaws back on Oct. 6.

In that 1-1 draw, Daniel Buchanan assisted on Bell's tally in the 34th minute, and UAH held that advantage until the 81st minute when MC leveled on its home pitch. In overtime, Birgisson had a strong attempt in the first 10-minute period to end it, and Myles Fullen kept the game a draw with a pair of saves in the second overtime.

On the year, Fullen has totaled 51 saves while owning a 1.44 goals against average.

Fullen's MC counterpart Humberto Pelaez has a goals against mark of 0.95, and the team is led offensively by Jacob Farthing who has five goals and six assists for 16 points.

Friday's other semifinal featured top-seeded West Alabama and No. 4 seed Montevallo, and the two winners will meet in the championship on Sunday at noon.
