UAH Advances to Semis with 96-81 Win Saturday

HUNTSVILLE | The top-seeded University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball advanced to the NCAA Division II South Regional semifinals with a 96-81 over the No. 8 seed Clark Atlanta at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall. The Chargers improve to 25-7 with the victory, while CAU ends the year at 21-12.
 
The Chargers will face the winner of Barry and Eckerd at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday.
 
Turning Point
-With the Panthers leading 40-35 with 5:11 left in the half, the Chargers went on an 18-3 run punctuated by a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Chayse Elliott to go into the locker room at the break up by 10 at 53-43.
 
Inside the Box Score
-Brandon Roberts led the Chargers on the night with 26 points on an impressive 11-for-15 showing from the floor, and for good measure he also added six rebounds and a pair of assists.
-Five other Chargers scored in double figures with both Justin Ward and Elliott coming off the bench to score 14, while Troy Saxton had 13, Kip Owens scored 12, and Seab Webster added 10.
-Saxton filled up the stat sheet, grabbing seven rebounds to go along with nine assists and a steal.
-Tajai Johnson had 19 to lead the Panthers.
-For the game, UAH connected on 61.4 percent of its attempts including a strong 13-for-29 showing from beyond the arc, while Clark Atlanta shot 47.7 percent.
-UAH won the battle on the glass by a 34-32 margin.
-The game was tied four times and featured 12 lead changes.
 
Inside the Flow
-Seven of the lead changes took place in the opening 11 minutes with UAH building up as much as a five-point advantage at 25-20 at the 10:10 mark only to see the guests go on an 18-7 run over the next nearly four minutes to go up 38-32 with 6:16 remaining in the half.
-The Chargers ended the run with a free throw and jumper from Roberts, but CAU's Damien Davis would make a layup fall with 5:11 on the clock to go back up by the aforementioned 40-35 score before the huge run to end the half from UAH.
-UAH scored the first four points of the second half and would go up by as many as 16 with 13:14 left in the game after another Elliott triple made it 70-54, but the Panthers would fight back and pull within seven at 85-78 with 4:52 remaining.
-Icing the contest, the Chargers scored the next 11 points to up by its largest lead of the night at 96-78 with a 3 from Roberts sealing the run before CAU added a late triple to produce the 96-81 final.
 
Noteworthy
-The Chargers established a GSC record for 3-pointers in a single season by knocking down their 350th of the year, besting the old mark of 349 set by former GSC member Troy in the 1990-91 season.
-Roberts has now scored at least 20 points in nine games, and his 26-point showing ties for his second-best of the year.
-Saxton's nine assists give him 155 on the season, and the performance also represented his second-most in a game this year as he also dished out nine against West Georgia on Feb. 11.
-Ward's double-figure performance is his third in the last four games, and his scoring average improves to 9.2 on the season.
