HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's tennis team earned a strong 7-2 win on Sunday, defeating visiting Martin Methodist in a match played indoors at Athletic Club Alabama due to rainy conditions. The Chargers move to 1-1 on the year, while MMC starts at 0-1.

The hosts started the contest with a 2-1 lead after doubles as
Cristina Cabanas and
Mariana Lopez were 8-3 winners on the third court before
Monika Polakovic and Marliene van Beek teamed together for an 8-6 win at the second position.

The top pairing of
Sarah Stearman and
Stefanie Mehlich battled strong, falling by a narrow 9-8 margin.

UAH's first point in singles play came when Lopez picked up a 6-2, 6-1 victory at the sixth spot, and the Chargers were pushed to the brink of sealing the match when van Beek picked up a 6-0, 6-0 blanking at the fifth position.

Mehlich then clinched the match for the Blue and White when she bounced back from dropping the opening set on the first court 6-3 to win the next two 6-1, 6-2.

Stearman and Polakovic added the two additional points for the Chargers when Stearman won 6-0, 6-0 at the third and Polakovic won 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 at the fourth position.

UAH will be back in action on Friday when the team travels to Memphis for four matches in three days starting with a 3 p.m. contest against Arkansas Fort Smith.
