UPCOMING WEEKEND: UAH (10-18-2, 9-13-2 WCHA) welcomes No. 5 Minnesota State (21-7-0, 17-5-0 WCHA) for a WCHA series at the Von Braun Center this Friday and Saturday night with puck drop slated for 7:07 p.m. both nights. This is the third consecutive season in which the Chargers will host the Mavericks in the Rocket City.
Â
RECENT ACTION: The Chargers are coming off a series split against No. 19 Northern Michigan at the VBC this past weekend, as NMU took the opener 4-3 before UAH won the finale on Sunday by a 4-2 final. UAH is now 5-4-1 in home games this season, giving the squad its highest home winning percentage (.550) since 2005-06 when the Chargers went 11-1-0 (.916) on their home ice.
Â
CONTINUED GROWTH: UAH is amidst its strongest season since joining the WCHA prior to the 2013-14 campaign, as fifth-year head coach
Mike Corbett has the team ranked sixth in the conference with a WCHA record of 9-13-2 for 30 points which matches the program's highest league point total set last season with a 9-16-3 WCHA record.
Â
HOMETOWN LEADER: Huntsville native
Josh Kestner scored two of UAH's four goals in the win on Sunday over NMU and three total markers in the series, giving the senior 20 goals this season to rank first in the WCHA and second nationally. Kestner – who has 26 points total from an additional six assists in 2017-18 – is the first 20 goal scorer for the Chargers since Bruce Mulherin (24 goals) and Jared Ross (22 goals) each eclipsed the mark in 2004-05. Moreover, Kestner enters the weekend with 40 goals in his career, putting him sixth in the program's modern Division I era.
Â
HOT STREAK: Tyler Poulsen – who began the year with 12 career points (6g-6a) – is now up to 23 points in his junior campaign with nine goals and 14 assists after a four-point weekend that was highlighted by two goals and an assist in the 4-2 win on Sunday. Poulsen has posted at least one point in each of the past five games, totaling three goals and three assists in that span.
Â
DYNAMIC DUO: Together, Kestner and Poulsen have combined for 49 points on 29 goals and 20 assists, and the duo are the first pair of 20-point scorers since 2009-10 when Cody Campbell (8-14—22) and Andrew Coburn (7-15—22) each bested 20 points.
Â
BETWEEN THE PIPES: Jordan Uhelski made his 24th and 25th starts in goal over the weekend against Northern Michigan, totaling 65 saves over the two-game series while seeing his season record move to 10-13-2 between the pipes. Uhelski enters the series against MSU ranked first in the WCHA with a .913 save percentage while recording the second most saves with 734 total stops.
Â
RANKED SUCCESS: UAH has won two games over ranked opponents for back-to-back seasons with the 4-2 win over No. 19 NMU on Sunday, after previously winning 4-2 over then-No. 15 Michigan Tech on Oct. 21. The Chargers never previously won two games in back-to-back seasons against nationally-ranked opponents in program history.
Â
MAVERICKS PROFILE: Minnesota State begins the weekend series with a 21-7-0 overall record and a 17-5-0 record, after most recently sweeping Alaska Anchorage at home this past Friday and Saturday. The Mavericks offense boasts a pair of 30-point scorers in Zeb Knutson (13-20—3) and CJ Suess (15-17—32), while Jason LaCouvee has played the majority of time in goal for a .913 save percentage and a 1.92 goals against average.
Â
SERIES HISTORY: The Chargers hold an all-time series record of 19-31-7 against the Mavericks, as Minnesota State won both games in Mankato earlier this season on Dec. 15-16. In Huntsville, UAH holds the edge in the all-time series at 13-12-3 entering the weekend.
