HUNTSVILLE | A shorthanded UAH women's tennis team fell 8-1 to visiting Montevallo on Tuesday afternoon. The Chargers slip to 5-4 (3-3 Gulf South Conference), while Montevallo improves to 10-1 (3-1 GSC).
The Chargers were only able to field four players due to injuries, putting the hosts in a 3-0 deficit from the start.
Those that were able to play, however, put up a strong fight against the Falcons, starting in doubles where the top pairing of
Sarah Stearman and
Stefanie Mehlich lost by the slimmest of margins at 9-8.
UAH's point in the match came in singles action as
Cristina Cabanas won 7-6, 2-6, 10-8 at the second position, and two of the other three matches in which the Chargers were able to field a player also were tightly contest.
At the top spot, Mehlich won the opening set 6-2 before falling 6-4, 10-8, and at the No. 3, Stearman won the opener 6-3 before dropping the next to 6-4, 10-8.
UAH will be back in action on Saturday when the team welcomes Auburn Montgomery for an 11 a.m. contest.
