Chargers Tame Tigers in 71-58 Victory Thursday

Box Score HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team picked up a 71-58 victory over visiting West Alabama on Thursday evening at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall in a Gulf South Conference matchup. UAH improves to 7-8 (5-4 GSC), while UWA slips to 7-9 (4-5 GSC).
 
Turning Point
-UAH closed out the first quarter on a 12-3 run to lead West Alabama 14-7 after 10 minutes, and the Chargers would not look back as the squad led the rest of the way through the contest for the 71-58 win on Tuesday.
 
Inside the Box Score
-Baylee Johnson paced the Chargers offense with a dazzling performance, as the senior posted a game-high 27 points on 11-of-21 shooting from the floor that also included a 5-for-10 mark on three-pointers.
-Johnson additionally tied for the team lead in assists with four, while adding three rebounds to the effort.
-Aryn Sanders had a strong overall performance on Tuesday with 25 points and a team-best 13 rebounds against West Alabama. Defensively, Sanders led the Chargers with three steals and posted one block.
-Sanders dominated at the charity stripe, going a perfect 8-for-8 on free throws.
-Holly Harris joined Johnson and Sanders in double-digit scoring with 12 points in addition to two rebounds, four assists and two steals.
 Katie Speegle rated second on the roster with six rebounds.
-A total of eight Chargers had two rebounds or more.
-UAH limited UWA to 37.5 percent (21-56) on field goals on the night.
 
Inside the Flow
- After West Alabama had an early 4-2 lead over UAH with 7:32 remaining in the first quarter, the Chargers turned in a 12-3 run to close out the frame for a 14-7 advantage heading to the second.
- UAH had its most efficient performance in the second quarter as the team went 8-for-13 on field goals while sinking 2-of-5 from beyond the arc, giving the Chargers a 33-25 lead at halftime.
- The Chargers dominated the glass in the third quarter, outrebounding the Tigers 15-7 which helped the Blue & White to a 43-31 advantage entering the fourth.
- UAH maintained its lead again in the fourth quarter by outscoring UWA 21-19 to complete the 71-58 victory on Tuesday.
 
Noteworthy
- Johnson's 27 points are a season-high for the senior, and she's now recorded 25 or more points in back-to-back games.
- Sanders' 25 points were a career-best, as her previous career mark of 24 points was set earlier this season against West Florida on Dec. 15.
 
Next Time Out
- UAH returns to action next Thursday with a trip to Delta State to continue GSC play.
