Charger Tennis Opens Up Postseason Play on Thursday

HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville tennis teams will open up play at the 2019 Gulf South Conference Championships on Thursday in Montgomery, Alabama, as the women's team is the sixth-seeded taking on No. 3 seed Mississippi College and the men's team is the No. 8 seed slated to face top-seeded Valdosta State.
 
The women's contest is slated for a 9 a.m. start, while the men's match will start at 1:30 p.m.

On the women's side, the Chargers went 10-10 on the year in reaching double figures in victories for the first time since 2016, and the squad captured the sixth seed after going 5-6 in conference play, and this will mark UAH's fourth straight berth into the league's postseason event.
 
Three different Chargers have reached double figures in victories in singles play including Stefanie Mehlich who has gone a strong 12-5 overall and 7-2 against GSC opponents at the No. 1. Presley Thomas recorded a team-best 13 wins in singles during the regular season of her freshman campaign while playing the majority of her contests at the No. 4 on her way to posting six GSC wins, while fellow freshman Karolin Kirchtag won 11 overall and six in conference play mostly at the fifth position.
 
UAH has been strong in doubles play with Sarah Stearman and Mariana Lopez teaming up for an 11-4 overall mark including a 5-2 record against league opponents, while Mehlich and Kirchtag enter the postseason at 10-7 overall including a 5-3 GSC mark.
 
MC heads into the tournament at 15-5 and finished third after going 9-2 in the league, and the Choctaws won 4-1 in Huntsville on March 2 with UAH winning the doubles point in that contest.
 
The men's team went 8-10 overall this season including a pair of wins in conference play that helped the squad earn its 11th consecutive trip to the conference tournament. 
 
UAH is led in singles play by Dylan Hall who is 13-5 on the season including 6-3 against GSC opponents while playing entirely at the No. 3, while Sebastian Rohrbach has gone 10-8 with four wins in league action at the second position. Playing the majority of his matches at the fourth spot, Tim Nutz has also reached double figures in victories by going 11-6 including four victories in GSC contests.
 
Hall and Rohrbach have also been particularly strong in doubles, going 10-5 overall which leads the team including a team-best five wins against conference opposition.
 
The Blazers finished the regular season at 12-3 including a perfect 10-0 mark in conference play, and VSU won 6-1 in Huntsville on March 16 with Rohrbach claiming UAH's point in that contest.
