Chargers Face Lander for Regular Season Title Saturday

4/29/2022 11:19:00 AM

HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's lacrosse team is set to host the most important regular season game in program history, welcoming Lander for a 12 p.m. contest on Saturday that will determine the regular season champion of the Peach Belt Conference and the host of the upcoming PBC tournament.

UAH enters the game at 8-6 (4-0 PBC), while the Bearcats visit at 11-4 (4-0 PBC).

Admission to Saturday's game is free courtesy of Alabama Credit Union.

The Chargers have rolled through conference play to this point, outscoring PBC opponents by a 62-25 margin in the four games, and the team has held the opposition to single-digits in goals in three of the four contests.

UAH's offensive attack in PBC action has been balanced, with 10 different players having at least five points, and that group is led by Reid Vender who has scored eight times and added four assists for 12 points.

And then there is the fine work in goal from Zak Welsh who has earned USILA D2 Team of the Week honors in three straight weeks, thanks in large part to his work against PBC competition that has seen him post a 5.86 goals against average and a .722 save percentage.

Hunter Coleman has picked up a team-best 20 ground balls in PBC play, and he has also gone 42-for-62 in faceoffs.

Lander comes to the Rocket City having also maneuvered through conference play with a perfect record to this point, scoring 79 times while allowing just 34 goals. Overall on the season, Adam Mather leads the Bearcats with 67 points from 41 goals and 26 assists, while Carter Wilcox has a team-high 45 goals and 12 assists for 57 points. Liam Mackay has the majority of minutes in goal for Lander, posting an 8.44 goals against average and a .620 save percentage.

UAH is 3-1 all-time against the Bearcats with the only loss coming in double overtime in the only road game for the Chargers in the series. That was a 15-14 setback on March 20 of last year, but UAH responded by picking up a 12-11 win at home in the regular season before also taking a 20-10 victory in the semifinals of the PBC tournament.

Both teams have earned a bye back into the semifinals this year, with the winner slated to be the host of the semifinal round and championship game on May 6 and 8, respectively.
