HUNTSVILLE | Dr. Cade Smith, Director of Athletics at The University of Alabama in Huntsville, has announced several new roles within the athletic department on Monday.

"We are fortunate to have a great team here in our athletic department and I am grateful for Penn (Garvich) and what he has managed to do so far for us on the external side and in the community. Jen (Cole) has excelled in her role as SWA and Compliance officer and has continued take on responsibilities as a leader in our department. I feel that we are super fortunate to have these two as Deputy ADs and I am grateful to learn from them. I am also thankful that Tanner (Mickey) has agreed to step into his new role as he leads our athletics communications unit. He has done a great job and been a vital part of our recent success and I am excited to see to how he will continue to make an impact on our department and student athletes."

Garvich has been named the Deputy Athletic Director for External Operations as he takes lead on revenue generation along with marketing strategies for UAH athletics. Garvich enters his second year with UAH athletics. 

Dr. Cole has been promoted into the role of Deputy Athletics Director for Internal Operations. Dr. Cole rises to the position after serving the department most recently as Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Affairs and Senior Woman Administrator. 

Prior to her role as Associate AD, she served as Assistant Director of Athletics Compliance and Student-Athlete Development from January 2021 to August 2024. Dr. Cole is in her 13th year overall with the Chargers.

Mickey has been promoted into the role of Associate Athletic Director for Athletics Communications. Mickey enters his third year with the Chargers after joining the department in March 2023.
