Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – On a penalty kick goal from
Ragnar Gunnarsson with just over a minute remaining in the second overtime, the UAH men's soccer team got the perfect ending to a tremendous regular season as it defeated visiting West Florida 1-0 at Charger Field. The Chargers move to 11-4 (4-1 Gulf South Conference) while UWF closes out the regular season at 8-6-2 (3-2 GSC).
The two teams will meet again on Friday in the GSC Tournament in Pensacola, Fla., with UAH holding the No. 2 seed and the Argos holding down the No. 3 spot in the field. The time for the match will be announced later by the GSC.
Through 108 minutes, nothing had been decided as the two teams traded solid chances that could have produced a victory for either side in regulation, but when presented with the golden opportunity to earn the golden goal, Gunnarsson capitalized, sparking a raucous celebration from the Blue and White as UAH knocked off West Florida for the first time since 2000.
The Chargers had a chance to go into the locker room up 1-0 at the half as
Felix Hjalmarsson had a strong attempt in the waning moments of the stanza that was just saved by the UWF keeper. UAH then nearly took the lead right after halftime break as
Kyle Simmons had a try that was stopped, and an Argo defender got in the way of Gunnarsson's rebound try.
Not that the visitors didn't also have some good attempts – perhaps none more so than in the 62nd minute when UAH goalie
Kel Markert received some help from the iron as a West Florida try clanked off the left post.
On the day, Markert stopped three shots – including two in the first period of extra time – to give him six shutouts on the season.
The clean sheet was the eighth of the year, breaking the old school record of seven that was set both in 1997 and 1998. The record-breaking performance was due in large part to seniors
Jarrod Muggleton and
Tim Mead who has both been solid all season defensively for the Chargers.
The pair and three other Chargers were recognized prior to the game as they played in their final contest on the UAH pitch.
UWF ended the contest with a 12-9 advantage in shots, though the Chargers won the shots on goal battle at a 5-3 margin. 23 fouls were called in the contest, and four cards were issued – two to each team.
