FLORENCE, Ala. – Playing its third five-set match in six Gulf South Conference matches, the UAH volleyball team saw a valiant effort come up just short on the road at North Alabama on Tuesday night. The 3-2 loss takes the Lady Chargers to 6-12 (2-4 GSC) on the season while UNA improves to 14-3 (4-1 GSC).
The Lady Chargers took the first set by a 25-22 score despite being outhit by the hosts by a .222 to .189 margin. The start of the frame was tight, but UNA used a 6-2 run to turn an 8-8 tie into a 14-10 advantage – its largest of the set. UAH whittled away at the deficit and eventually pulled back into a tie at 18-18 to set itself up to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
After falling 25-18 in the second as UNA evened things up at 1-1, the Blue and White responded with another set victory as it took the third 25-20. With the frame tied at 16-16, the visitors used a 9-4 run to capture the stanza. The third marked the only set in which UAH outhit the Lions, doing so by a .179-.125 clip.
UNA proceeded to dominate the fourth set, winning 25-15 to force the deciding fifth.
Despite a negative attack percentage, the Lady Chargers hung tight in the final frame, and the squad held a 10-9 advantage before a pair of miscues gave UNA the lead. The Lions then would not relinquish their hold on the set en route to winning 15-12.
With 12 kills,
Jessica Ruple lead the UAH attack, and
Kelly Wilson picked up 33 assists on the night. Defensively the team was paced by
Kaeli McCaghren's 22 digs.
Stacey Sargent dug out 14 balls, and
Shelby League added 10 digs to round out UAH's players in double figures.
Angela Thurmond led UAH with five blocks.
The Lady Chargers will return to action on Saturday when they take on North Carolina-Pembroke at Montevallo with the action slated to start at 2 p.m.
