Season Ends For Chargers With Tough Loss To UWF

Box Score PENSACOLA, Fla. – Falling in heartbreaking fashion, the UAH men's soccer team dropped it 2011 Gulf South Conference Tournament semifinal contest with West Florida by a 3-2 score on Friday evening as the Argos scored the game-winner in the final minute of regulation. The remarkable turnaround season ends for the Chargers with a record of 11-5 after the squad went 4-13 a year ago.

Second-year Head Coach Mike Mitchell saw his team etch its name into the record books this season as it was strong defensively, recording a school-record eight shutouts in the season. The squad also featured a pair of the best offensive performances in the Blue and White since the late 1990s as it boasted two of the nation's top scorers in Kyle Simmons and Felix Hjalmarsson.

The Chargers fell behind by a pair of goals Friday night as UWF scored back-to-back goals in the 31st and 33rd minutes. The first score was unlucky as Jack Salafrio's shot caromed off the crossbar back to Junior Prevalus who buried the rebound.

On the verge of going into the locker room down 2-0 at the half, the Blue and White received a break when it was awarded a penalty kick in the 45th minute. Ragnar Gunnarsson – the hero of the last contest between these two teams – took the kick and rifled it past the UWF keeper to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The score remained that way until senior Jarrod Muggleton knotted the game up at 2-2 on a header off a cross from Juan Carlos Salazar in the 63rd minute.

Playing a man down after picking up a red card in the 69th minute, the Chargers fought hard to stay tied, and it seemed as if the game was going to overtime but Sean Reynolds scored on a header off another crossbar rebound with 20 seconds left to produce the tough decision.

The Argos held a 24-7 advantage in shots, including an 11-2 difference in shots on goals as junior Kel Markert wrapped up his first campaign in Huntsville with a nine-save showing.

The contest marks the final one for Muggleton and four other seniors, but the Chargers will return a majority of its talent through the midfield forward next season as Mitchell will look to continue to build the Chargers into a consistent force in the GSC.
