UAH Torches Valdosta State 3-1

Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – After dropping the first set, the University of Alabama in Huntsville volleyball squad bounced back in a huge way on Friday night, reeling off three straight set victories to defeat visiting Valdosta State 3-1 at Spragins Hall. The Lady Chargers improve to 10-11 (4-5 Gulf South Conference) with the victory, and VSU stumbles to 11-7 (4-5 GSC).

The triumph avenges an earlier 3-0 loss in Valdosta earlier this season.

After being outhit by a .238-.222 margin in the opening 19-25 first set, the Lady Chargers responded and capitalized on seven Valdosta State errors in the second set to win 25-21. UAH then dominated the rest of the match, picking up a 25-18 win in the third before closing out the match with a dominating 25-15 performance to earn the victory.

The whole match really turned around on a six-point swing in the second set that saw the hosts go from trailing 14-10 to holding a 16-14 advantage. Kelsey Williams picked up two of her nine kills during the span while UAH also took advantage of a pair of VSU miscues.

Strong at the net, Williams turned in a block solo while also chipping in on nine others as she helped the team to a strong 15 blocks on the night.

The rest of the way in the second set, the Blue and White only allowed the guests to win consecutive points once more en route to pulling even at 1-1 in the match.

Early in the third set, UAH's Angela Thurmond helped insure that the momentum remained on her team's side as she put away three balls in a 6-0 run for the Lady Chargers that helped the team take a 6-2 lead. She would finish the night with a team-best 18 kills, hitting at a very strong .485 clip as she committed just two errors on 33 total swings.

Though VSU would pull to as close as one at 16-15, Erin Keeney sparked a 5-0 run with a pair of kills, and the Lady Chargers would not look back as they wrapped up the set with the 25-18 score.

The Blazers never got much going in the fourth and final set, attacking at -.091 in the frame while UAH hit .279 for the frame – just off the team's match high of .286 that came in the third.

Haley Snyder came up big for the home team in the set, picking up four of her 12 kills as she joined Thurmond in double digits. She was strong defensively as well as she picked up a double-double by collecting 11 digs.

Stacey Sargent led the way with 19 digs, and Ashton Baker scooped out 10 to give UAH three in double figures. Baker also had a double-double as she collected 39 assists.

The Lady Chargers will look to build off of Friday night's victory when West Florida visits on Sunday at 1 p.m.
