Chargers End Season With Tough OT Loss At UWA

Box Score LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team saw its tough 2012 season come to a close on Sunday in heartbreaking fashion as the Chargers fell 2-1 in overtime at West Alabama. UWA improves to 12-6 (8-4 Gulf South Conference) while UAH ends the year at 1-15 (0-12 GSC).

Kel Markert was more than impressive in his final game in the Blue and White as the senior goalkeeper turned in a career-best 10 saves – including several stellar stops throughout the affair.

Unfortunately, however, the Tigers were able to score off a scrum in front of Markert in the 96th minute to pick up the victory.

It was UWA that scored first, notching a goal on an indirect free kick in the 18th minute after the UAH keeper was whistled for maintaining possession of the ball for more than six seconds. Victor Gazza made the call sting even more as he booted it into the net to produce an early 1-0 lead.

The score remained that way until the Chargers pulled even in the 63rd off a corner.

Sam Dean – who has finished the year strong on corner kicks – played the ball short to Kyle Simmons who gave it back quickly to Dean. The sophomore defender then served it in towards Mitch Wilson who pushed it to the far post and in to tally his second strike of the season and ultimately force the extra time.

The point on the assist was the first of the season for Dean, and Simmons ends the year as the team's leading scorer for the second straight season as he recorded 14 points with Sunday's helper giving him four assists to go along with five goals.

The Chargers will aim to bounce back next season as the squad featured just two seniors and one junior in the 2012 campaign.
