BOCA RATON, Fla. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team (2-5) dropped two more games in a doubleheader against Lynn (7-1) on Saturday afternoon at Roger Dean Stadium. UAH's rally fell short in the first game, 6-4, and for the second straight day, the Fighting Knights took the second game with a walk-off run in extra innings.
Up next, UAH will host Martin Methodist on Feb. 14 in the Chargers' home opener. The single game will be played at Charger Park with first pitch slated for 1 p.m. CST.
GAME ONE
UAH began to chip away at a four-run deficit in the top of the ninth inning but the rally fell short as the Chargers dropped game three of the four-game series, 6-4, to Lynn.
The Chargers opened the scoring in the first inning when after junior Justin Pearson led the game off with a double, senior Grant DeBruin legged out a double of his own to bring around Pearson to score.
With two outs already in the sixth inning, sophomores Justin Riddle and Blake Massey and senior Eddie Villalta connected on back-to-back-to-back singles which would score one more run. Heading to the bottom of the sixth inning, the Chargers held a 2-0 advantage.
Unfortunately, a leadoff walk in the bottom of the sixth inning was followed by a two-run home run to left centerfield by Anthony Boza knotted the game at 2-2. In the seventh, UAH looked to answer with a two-out triple by DeBruin but the next batter struck out swinging.
Lynn, however, did take its first lead of the contest in the bottom of the seventh when it plated two runs, going up 4-2. The Fighting Knights continued to cross the plate in the eighth, notching two more runs off a solo home run by Joe Sharkey and a loaded-bases single by Boza.
Trailing 6-2, UAH scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to pull to within two runs, 6-4, but with two outs already, junior Vincent Kortbawi grounded out to the shortstop to end the rally and the game. Earlier in the frame with two outs, DeBruin blasted his second home run of the year over the right field wall to bring in senior Jon McKinney who had singled to centerfield just before DeBruin reached the plate.
Senior David Kendrick picked up the start on the hill for the Chargers, who allowed two runs on six hits with two strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work. Freshman Corey Hale (0-1), working in relief of Kendrick, was tagged with the loss after allowing one run in just 0.2 innings.
Lynn's Austin Bailey (1-0) earned the win after coming in to pitch in relief. Bailey worked 2.1 scoreless innings, struck out three Chargers and did not allow a run.
GAME TWO
Despite bringing across seven-runs in the top of the fifth inning and two more in the sixth, UAH couldn't hold off the power-hitting Anthony Boza of Lynn who connected on his third home run of the game to score the walk-off victory for the Fighting Knights, 10-9, in eight innings. The game was a scheduled seven-inning contest.
Lynn jumped out to a 8-0 advantage over UAH, including a five-run inning in the bottom of the third. The Fighting Knights opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning, coming off Boza's first deep ball of the game.
In the fifth inning, UAH began its rally by loading the bases with three straight singles by senior Jon McKinney, senior Mike Love and junior
Tyrone Smith. Freshman Robbie Friedlein reached on a fielder's choice as McKinney was thrown out at home plate. With the bases still loaded, three more singles in a row plated UAH's first three runs of the game. Back-to-back walks brought across two more runs for the Chargers and forced Lynn to make a pitching change. Batting around in the inning, Love returned to the plate, hitting a sac fly to centerfield to bring in another run to cut the deficit to 8-7.
After Lynn scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, UAH tacked on two more runs in the sixth to tie the game at 9-9. Junior Justin Pearson walked to lead off the inning before senior Grant DeBruin came to the plate and connected on his second home run of the day, knotting the game at 9-9.
Both teams were held scoreless until Boza returned to the plate in the bottom of the eighth inning with one out. On a 2-1 pitch, Boza hit the walk-off solo home run over the left field wall, giving Lynn a 10-9 victory.
UAH redshirt sophomore pitcher Kyle Jeter (0-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing two runs on four hits while fanning two in 3.1 innings of relief work. Lynn's Joe Sharkey (1-0) came in as a reliever as well, but picked his first win this year after working 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out two.
