HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team (4-10) swept a doubleheader against Stillman (1-9) on Saturday afternoon at Charger Park. The Chargers' rallied from a four-run deficit to grab an 11-6 victory in game one, snapping a nine-game skid for UAH, before taking game two over the Tigers by a score of 6-2.
UAH returns to the diamond on Sunday to play the final game of the three-game series against Stillman. First pitch at Charger Park is slated for 1 p.m. CST.
GAME ONE
With its highest offensive output of the year, UAH downed Stillman, 11-6, in game one after trailing 5-1 through the first two innings.
Senior outfielder Ty Chancelor finished 2-for-3 at the plate, including one home run, five RBI and scored three runs. Sophomore shortstop Blake Massey posted a game-high three hits in the game while driving in one RBI.
After UAH opened the scoring with a run in the first inning, Stillman erupted for five runs in the top of the second inning to take a 5-1 lead. Jarius Brown led off the second frame with a solo home run over the left field wall, tying the game at 1-1 before the Tigers scored four more runs in the inning.
In the bottom of the third, UAH plated four runs to knot the contest at 5-5. With the bases loaded and one out, Chancelor ripped a single up the middle to bring across two runs. The next batter reached on a fielder's choice, but a muffed throw by the shortstop at second base advanced Chancelor to third and scored another run. The final run of the inning came thanks to a sacrifice fly by junior Vincent Kortbawi, which plated Chancelor from third base.
Stillman regained the lead in the top of the fifth frame, 6-5, but the lead was short-lived as the Chargers plated three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to take an 8-6 lead.
UAH added its insurance runs in the sixth inning. Chancelor, with runners on first and second base, came to the plate and belted his second home run of the year over the right field wall to give the Chargers a comfortable 11-6 advantage.
UAH's junior pitcher Dana Wright (1-0) picked up his first victory of the season as he worked the complete 7.0-inning game, allowing six runs on nine hits while notching six strikeouts and one walk.
Stillman's starting pitcher Gregory Taylor (0-2) was tagged with the loss after giving up eight runs – four earned – in 4.1 innings of work. He allowed eight hits, while fanning five batters and walking two.
GAME TWO
Senior third baseman Grant DeBruin highlighted game two for the Chargers, leading UAH to a 6-2 victory over Stillman. DeBruin finished the game with three hits, including two doubles while tallying four RBI. Sophomore Justin Riddle also had three hits in the game, scoring three runs and notching one RBI.
Stillman struck first, scoring one run in the first inning after Trent Posey led the game off with a triple. Posey then scored on the very next at-bat which was a groundout to second base.
In the bottom of the first inning, however, and with runners on first and second, DeBruin legged out his first double of the day to clear the bases and give UAH a 2-1 lead.
The Chargers then plated three more runs in the bottom of the second, adding to its lead and taking a comfortable 5-1 lead. In the fourth frame, DeBruin connected on his second double of the game to bring in the Chargers' final run of the day.
The Tigers brought across one run in the top of the fifth inning to cut the deficit to four runs, 6-2, but the damage had been done as UAH claimed the win.
Sophomore Drew Eiland (1-2) earned his first victory of the season as he worked the complete 7.0-inning game, allowing just two runs on eight. Eiland tallied two strikeouts on the day while walking three batters.
Stillman's Austin Leary (0-2) picked up his second loss of the year after starting the game and lasting just 4.0 innings. Leary allowed all six runs on eight hits, while walking one and striking out four.
