MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team completed a series sweep of the Christian Brothers Bucs with its second straight shutout, 5-0, Sunday at Buc Field. The Chargers improve to 11-12 overall and 4-2 in the Gulf South Conference, while CBU drops to 6-13 overall and 0-6 in league play.
The series sweep is the first conference three-game sweep of team since taking three from West Georgia on the road on April 18-19, 2009.
Senior shortstop Grant DeBruin finished the day 3-for-5 with a double, one RBI and a run scored, while junior outfielder Justin Pearson, senior second baseman Jon McKinney and freshman outfielder Chandler Brock all recorded doubles as well.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher David Kendrick (3-2) was solid on the mound once again for UAH, throwing 6.0 scoreless innings, allowing seven hits while striking out three to earn the victory. Junior righty Cody Barrett pitched 3.0 scoreless innings with one strikeout in relief of Kendrick to earn his second save of the season. CBU starter Jake Garbuzinski (1-2) took the loss after allowing four runs on nine hits in 7.1 innings pitched.
The Chargers opened the scoring in the first inning. Pearson led off with a double and advanced to third on a throwing error by the pitcher. Sophomore designated hitter Justin Riddle then ripped a single up the middle to score Pearson. In the fifth, UAH opened its lead to 2-0 after a two-out double by McKinney, followed by a Pearson single to left center to score McKinney.
With the bases loaded and just one out in the top of the eighth frame, senior outfielder Mike Love hit a single down into left field, scoring two more runs to give UAH a 4-0 lead.
The Chargers added one more insurance run in the ninth inning on DeBruin's double to right center, making the score 5-0.
UAH returns to action on Tuesday, March 13, when the Chargers welcome Kentucky State for a doubleheader set to begin at noon CDT at Charger Park.
