BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Extending its winning streak to a season-high six games for the second time this year, the University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team downed Miles, 9-3, on Wednesday at Rickwood Field – the oldest surviving baseball park in the United States. The Chargers have now won 12 of their last 14 after starting the year 2-10.
After the day, UAH improves to 14-12 on the year while Miles falls to 9-6 overall.
Starting junior pitcher Willard Bacon (2-1) picked up the victory for the Chargers, allowing just one unearned run which was his first run surrendered in his last 14.1 innings on the hill. Bacon hurled 6.0 innings, allowing just four hits while fanning a career-high eight batters. Zach Adams and Cody Barrett also saw action on the mound, working the remaining three innings.
Miles' starter Don Mack was tagged with the loss after working 5.2 innings, allowing five runs – four earned – on four hits, three walks and five hit-by-pitches.
Senior Ty Chancelor finished the day 3-for-3 from the plate and walked once, scoring four runs and notching one RBI.
Leading 5-0 through five frames, UAH finally surrendered a run to the Golden Bears in the bottom of the sixth inning off a RBI double by Jor Bisharat. The Chargers answered with another run in the top of the seventh after senior Mike Love hit a sacrifice fly to score Chancelor who had singled earlier in the frame.
Miles scored two more runs with one run crossing in the bottom of the seventh and bottom of the eighth innings to cut the score to 6-3 heading into the ninth.
UAH plated three runs in the top of the ninth, however, to put the game away 9-3. Chancelor started the scoring in the inning, crossing the plate from second base on a Love single. With runners on second and third, another run was able to score on a passed ball before Blake Massey hit a single to score the final run of the game.
