HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team returns to Gulf South Conference play with three games this weekend against the visiting New Orleans Privateers. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 10, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. CT at Charger Park. The series concludes on Sunday with a single game at 1 p.m. CT.
This will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The games will count for GSC records, though UNO will not be eligible for the postseason tournament due to the program's transition period into Division II.
UAH (14-12, 4-2 GSC) enters the weekend just one game behind conference leaders West Georgia and Delta State after claiming 12 of its last 14 contests, including each of the squad's last six games. The Chargers recently swept a home doubleheader from Kentucky State and claimed a single road game over Miles. In the last six games, UAH has outscored its opponent by a margin of 54-11.
UAH's recent turnaround coincides with the return of senior preseason All-American Eric Deese to the lineup on Mar. 10 at Christian Brothers. Deese played in the season opener before missing over a month of the season, returning to hit 13-of-27 (.481) with nine runs and six RBIs during his current six-game hitting streak.
The Chargers' pitching staff has been outstanding over the last six games, allowing just six earned runs in 48.0 innings. UAH has used nine pitchers during the winning streak, compiling an impressive 1.12 ERA as a staff.
UNO (8-7, 2-3 GSC) travels to Huntsville as a squad that has been playing better away from home, holding a 5-1 mark in road games compared to 3-6 record at home. The Privateers are led by Cameron Wheeless who is hitting .340 with three home runs, three doubles, 10 runs scored and 12 RBI on the year. Christian Cale has worked a team-high 28.0 innings on the hill, allowing 10 earned runs this season on 28 hits, while notching 22 strikeouts.
After this weekend, UAH will host a non-conference doubleheader against Lincoln Memorial on Tuesday, March 20 at Charger Park. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.
