UAH Opens Conference Slate With No. 11 Delta State

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team opens Gulf South Conference play with three games this weekend against the visiting No. 11/14 Delta State Statesmen. The series begins with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 3, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. CST at Charger Park. The series concludes on Sunday with a single game, beginning at 1 p.m. CST.

UAH (7-10) enters the weekend on a five-game winning streak after starting the season with a record of 2-10. In the team's last outing, the Chargers swept a doubleheader against Carson-Newman with an offensive explosion. UAH outscored the Eagles 19-1 over the two games, including its first shutout of the year in game one, 9-0.

Highlighting the offensive production for UAH has been senior Ty Chancelor who was recently named the GSC Player of the Week. Chancelor batted .400 (6-for-15) at the plate over the past five games with one double, two home runs and seven RBI, while slugging for a .867 percentage. He has tallied at least one hit in each of the past five games.

DSU (8-1) is led by Michael Vinson who is hitting .541 with two doubles, a triple and a home run while scoring 13 runs and driving in 13 RBI on the year. In addition, Brent Kakwitch is batting .375 with two doubles, a triple and has scored 10 runs while tallying eight RBI on the year for the Statesmen.

The Statesmen's lone loss came at the hands of No. 1 Tampa by a score of 2-1 on a neutral field. DSU is currently leading the conference with 102 runs scored on the year, and has crossed the plate more than 10 times on five occasions this year already, including a 24-run game and 20-run game.

DSU holds the advantage in the all-time series by a margin of 29-14, and UAH has won just three games in the previous 10 meeting between the two programs. UAH carries a record of 5-8 when Delta State visits Huntsville, though the Chargers have claimed four of the last five games over the Statesmen in Huntsville.

Live stats will not be available for this weekend's games.

After this weekend, UAH continues GSC play as the Chargers travel to Memphis, Tenn., to face Christian Brothers on March 10-11. Saturday's doubleheader is slated to begin at noon CST, while Sunday's first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. CST.
