HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team begins a seven-game road stretch as the Chargers face Gulf South Conference opponent West Alabama in Livingston, Ala., on March 24-25 in a three-game series. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 24, with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. CDT at Tartt Field. The series concludes on Sunday with a single game at 1 p.m.
UAH (17-14, 6-3 GSC) enters the weekend in a three-team tie for second place in the GSC with North Alabama and West Georgia after claiming 15 of its last 19 contests. As a team, UAH has tallied at least 10 hits in nine of the last 19 games. The Chargers recently claimed its second league series of the year by taking two-of-three games against visiting New Orleans.
At the plate, senior Grant DeBruin currently leads the team and the GSC in hits (41), home runs (6) and total bases (68) and ranks second in the league with 26 RBI.
The Chargers' pitching staff has also performed well as of late, allowing no more than three four earned runs in the previous 12 games while striking out 85 batters in 97.0 innings.
UWA (12-14, 4-5 GSC) hosts UAH as a squad that has been playing well at home this year, holding a 8-3 mark at home compared to a 4-11 record in road games. The Tigers most recently took two-of-three games from No. 3 Delta State within the confines of its home park, outscoring the Statesmen in the series, 26-11.
The Tigers are led by Micah Reaves who is hitting .371 with one home runs, six doubles, 15 runs scored and 21 RBI on the year. Barry Meeks has worked a team-high 46.1 innings on the hill, allowing 15 earned runs this season on 35 hits, while striking out nearly one batter per inning with 43 fans.
The Chargers hold the advantage in the all-time series by a slim margin of 29-22, and UAH has claimed four of the previous six meetings between the two programs. UAH carries a record of 15-7 when visiting Livingston, though the Chargers are just 3-7 in the last 10 games at UWA.
After this weekend, UAH will travel to Carrollton, Ga., for three games against GSC foe West Georgia on March 31 and April 1. First pitch of the March 31 doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m. CDT while the game on April 1 is set for noon.
