HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team continues its road stretch this weekend, as the Chargers face Gulf South Conference opponent West Georgia in Carrollton, Ga., in a three-game series. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 31, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. CDT at Cole Field. The series concludes on Sunday with a single game at noon.
UAH (18-16, 7-5 GSC) enters the weekend in fourth-place in the conference, but with the same number of league wins as GSC-leader Valdosta State. The Chargers are led into the weekend by senior Grant DeBruin who is the reigning GSC Player of the Week for the second time this year. DeBruin batted 11-for-20 last week, lacing three doubles and his GSC-leading sixth home run while plating nine RBI and scoring four runs.
In its last outing, UAH dropped a GSC series to West Alabama two games to one. Prior to the series loss, the Blue and White had claimed nine of its last 11 games, including a 2-1 series victory over New Orleans and series sweep of Christian Brothers.
UWG (17-12, 8-4 GSC) enters the weekend in third-place in the GSC, but has the most conference wins in the league. Of the Wolves 17 wins this year, the squad picked up one against then-No. 5 North Alabama by a score of 5-2 – UNA is now the top-ranked team in the nation. UWG claimed its most recent GSC series over New Orleans on the road by taking two-of-three games.
Led by Evan Hester who is hitting .355 with one home run, one triple, a league-leading 12 doubles, 23 runs scored and 22 RBI on the year, UWG has the second-best team batting average in the GSC. Cody Skinner leads the Wolves on the mound with a record of 5-1 and ERA of 2.27, while allowing 10 earned runs in 39.2 innings of work and striking out 21 on the year.
The Chargers hold the advantage in the all-time series by a margin of 34-21, and UAH has claimed 11 of the previous 15 meetings. The Wolves have notched most of its wins when playing UAH in Carrollton, as the Chargers carry a record of 12-14 when visiting West Georgia.
After this weekend, UAH will travel to Pulaski, Tenn., on April 4 for the second game of a home-and-home series with Martin Methodist after the teams met in Huntsville earlier this season. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. CDT.
